Re: Partial Pec Tear surgery
The muscle on that side comes back really quick when your able to start doing more. Just let that tissue heal. I'll bet he'll let you do a lot more (still light) at the 12 week mark, then you'll be able to stimulate the shoulder and pec again, albeit through a restricted ROM. Still nice to feel the muscle working again.

Re: Partial Pec Tear surgery
yea, he said at 8 weeks post op "we'll actually have some tissue in there that's worth a damn" lol. He said right now there isn't much collagenous tissue which is what we want, but it's sturdy enough to do everyday things like brush my teeth, etc.

Re: Partial Pec Tear surgery
You will be back in no time. Keep the fire burning. I did high cable fly's today for the first time using only 10lbs. I'm up to 45's on the hammer st. and 20lbs. on the incline hammer st. Seems like forever since my tear but I often look over at the bench that I was using on Dec. 23rd, and I can remember the feeling and the sound of the weights going everywhere.
Stay focused champ!

Re: Partial Pec Tear surgery
saw the doc on monday. He felt the area and then asked me to resist him in several force exercises. I remember very vividly his response. He cocked his eyebrow and said "I'll be honest with you, I can't believe how fast you are healing." He said that at 8 weeks post op most people have a huge ball of scar tissue still in the area and he said that mine is very soft indicating that the scar tissue is being cleared out very effectively. He then prescribed a home electrical stimulation unit. I went to the trainer's room so their trainer could show me how to use it. The guy hooks it up to me and jacks it all the way up... so much force that it pulled my arm into my side. It felt like I had a spasm in my chest. I freaked out, I thought I had certainly torn it again with that much force. He said "oh no no no... EMS won't tear it" and send me on my way. On my way out I told the surgeon what happened and whether or not he wanted me putting that much stimulation on it and he said "NO NO NO NO! Just enough to make it flex" Good thing I asked him. In any case, the fact that such a tremendous force didn't tear the repair really makes me feel confident about how good it is. What can I say, my surgeon is a friggin' stud. He was just named a surgeon for the US Olympic team! I feel great 8 weeks post op and you can hardly see my scar.
On tuesday I did more smith machine squats. I could actually get my right hand into position for squats and did my warm up sets with both hands, but switched to one hand for my heavy sets... I didn't want to get heavy and then accidentally contract my chest.
working sets were
-325 X 5
-345 X 5
-365 X 5
-385 X 5
-405 X 5 (pictures)
-425 X 5
felt really good :D

Re: Partial Pec Tear surgery
Great update Layne, glad to see that things are clearing up and you are making solid progress. How has your nutrition played a part while in recovery? Did you have to make major changes to what you are doing?

Re: Partial Pec Tear surgery
well i kept everything very similar, but i kept the BCAAs high, and added in HMB to reduce protein degradation. seemed to work very well. my right side as already noticibly put on muscle just from being out of the sling and doing isometrics

Re: Partial Pec Tear surgery
Layne,
I found your posts while searching for info on pec tears. I tore my left sternal head of my pec off the tendon in December while inclining with 285. It was my fifth set and it just popped when I started my third rep. I saw three doctors, two that are team physicians for the Knicks and the Mets. They both told me surgery probably would not help me and I did therapy for 8 weeks. It feels ok but I have a huge dent in my chest and I gave up benching. I can do 50 lbs db's then start to feel pain, I used to warm up with 60 or 70. They said surgery is not effective since the muscle cannot be stitched to the tendon, they would need to anchor it to the bone and it is not usually successful (for strength) compared to just therapy. I benched 340 a few weeks before I tore it and now could probably only bench about 95. I'm not a bodybuilder but have been competing in bobsledding for the past 2 years. So the dent doesn't matter but the loss of strength sucks and may end my chances of competing for team USA.
Let me know if this is the kind of injury you had and where you got surgery. Mine is a partial thickness tear of the sternal head but it is pretty big. I live near NYC. A note to anyone who reads this, my buddies had the incline bar set up with really heavy bands for extra resistance (over 45lbs of tension each). I think this is what probably caused the injury in addition to the bench being too inclined. I benched 405 several times in the past year with no problem, the angle and the bands may have been the issue. I know how you feel, this is one of the worst injuries for someone who trains.
Good luck.

Re: Partial Pec Tear surgery
sorry to hear about your injury. it sounds very similar to mine except I had a FULL tear of the sternal head of my pectoral. Surgeon said surgery probably would not help me, but it in fact did. I can give you the contact info for my surgeon if you like. You may also want to contact Victor Prisk (aka pittorthodoc ) on here as i believe he is very experienced in this realm and is near NYC.
good luck to you!

Re: Partial Pec Tear surgery
Please help!!! I had an MRI and the surgeon said my career is over. Can someone confirm? Here's the MRI results.
There is a tear of the sternal component of the right pectoralis major at its myotendinous juntion located approximately 4.5 CM medial to the tendon insertioin. A very small fragment of the pectoralis major tendonis retracted with the torn muscle. There is edema within the muscle along with mild retractionof the muscle. Perimuscular edema is present. Small amount of fluid is terposed between the pectoralis major and the coracobrachialis muscles. Almost the entire pectoralis major tendon insertionis intact. The clavicular component of the righ pectoralis major muscle is in tact. There is edema and a small of fluid located in the medial margin of the proximal arm. The remainder of the muscles are normal.
HELP!!!! The surgeon said there nothing to sew back together. He said it's like sewing yarn back to meat and he would be doing me a disservice by doing surgery. He said adema will set in and I will have to live with the deformity.

I don't know if it's repairable but don't take the docs word for it and get lots of second opinions.
I was told the same thing but another doc performed surgery anyway and managed to find a piece of tendon to sew back on.

I live close to the Akron area of Ohio. I'm 2 hours or so from Cleveland, Pittsburg and Columbus. I hear there is someone in Pittsburg specializing in this. Anyone know?
